Northeast of Phoenix (Tonto National Forest)
Directions/Parking: lots of parking areas along Four Peaks Wilderness Area
Time: 3-4 hours in a 4x4 vehicle, less in ATV/UTV/dirt bike (out & back)
Tip: recommend going over the mountain over to Roosevelt Lake for a swim. Adds about an hour of riding time.
Directions/Parking: "AZ-88" turns into Apache Trail Rd.
Time: 1.5 hours (one-way)
Tip: fun to stop in Youngstown & Tortilla Flats
Directions/Parking: E Cottonwood Canyon - dirt road off AZ-79 that leads to the trailhead.
Time: 6-7 hours in a 4x4 vehicle, less on ATV/UTV/dirt bike.
Directions/Parking: "Hewitt Station Road" - Forest Service Road 357.
Time: 4-5 hours in a 4x4 vehicle, less on ATV/UTV/dirt bike.
Directions/Parking: "E Cottonwood Canyon Rd" - dirt road off AZ-79 that leads to the trailhead.
Time: 2-3 hours (one-way).
North Phoenix/Black Canyon
Directions/Parking: (33°56'16.8"N 112°19'34.0"W) - park anywhere along Cow Creek rd.
Time: 4-5 hours in 4x4 vehicle, less in ATV/UTV/dirt bike (out & back).
Tip: there is a small market and gas station in the town of Crown King.
Directions/Parking: "Pine Mountain Wilderness" - just an intersection but limited parking around trailhead that rarely fills up.
Time: 2 hours (one-way).
